Good Faith Estimate

Understanding Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate and the No Surprises Act

At Midwest Alternative Treatment Clinic, we believe in price transparency and ensuring our patients understand their rights when it comes to medical costs. The No Surprises Act was designed to protect you from unexpected medical bills, and part of this law includes your right to a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for your healthcare services.

What is the No Surprises Act?

The No Surprises Act, effective January 1, 2022, is a federal law that protects patients from receiving surprise medical bills for out-of-network services, emergency care, and certain other medical expenses. This law ensures that you are not charged more than the in-network cost-sharing amount for covered services when you unknowingly receive care from an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility.

What is a Good Faith Estimate (GFE)?

Under this law, healthcare providers are required to give self-pay or uninsured patients an upfront estimate of the expected costs for medical services before they receive care. This estimate, known as a Good Faith Estimate (GFE), provides transparency in healthcare pricing and helps you plan for the cost of your treatment.

Your Rights Under the Good Faith Estimate

As a patient, you have the right to:

  • Receive a written Good Faith Estimate if you are uninsured or choosing to self-pay.
  • Get your estimate at least one business day before your scheduled service or procedure (or earlier if requested).
  • Receive an estimate that includes the total expected cost of all services related to your treatment, including fees for testing, therapy, or other necessary procedures.
  • Challenge a bill if the final charges are $400 or more above your Good Faith Estimate by initiating a dispute resolution process.

What Should You Do?

  • If you are uninsured or self-pay, always ask for a Good Faith Estimate before receiving care.
  • Review your estimate carefully to understand the expected costs.
  • If you receive a bill significantly higher than your estimate, you have the right to dispute it through the patient-provider dispute resolution process.
